Given the ways he has been used by the antipsychiatry folks it was interesting to hear him say that if he was deeply (even suicidally) depressed without any obvious external cause/bind that he would like a psychiatrist to give him a mood elevating drug.
Laing was never against drugs. He famously used quite a lot of them. He seems to have been against the iatrogenic effects of drugs, as any good doctor should be.
ah well as you know no drugs without side-effects but my note was more towards how he has been used than how he lived, I was aware of his more recreational use but hadn’t heard him address his own personal preferences in terms of seeking psychiatric help with moods and all, he was strikingly deferential here I thought which wasn’t always the case.
The complexities of personalities I suppose, always exceeding one dimensional stances.
O yeh. And obviously it is one thing to experiment on/with others and another when it comes to one’s own sufferings.
