Judith Butler (born February 24, 1956) is an American philosopher and gender theorist, whose work has had a significant influence on the fields of feminist, queer, and literary theory, philosophy, political philosophy, and ethics. Butler is Maxine Elliot Professor in the Departments of Rhetoric and Comparative Literature and the Co-director of the Program of Critical Theory at the University of California, Berkeley, where she has taught since 1993. Butler has been outspoken on many contemporary political issues. She has been active in lesbian and gay human rights, and, more recently, she has engaged with the question of Palestine/Israel.
