The Earth Multiple – Towards a Climate Pluriverse?

The keynote lecture below was delivered by Dr. Martin Savransky at the STingG Symposium 2024 — an event held on June 19 at the University of Sheffield’s Arts Tower.

The symposium also featured a networking lunch hosted by the Southern Theorising Group (STingG) and an Early Career Researcher (ECR) roundtable titled “Operationalising the Pluriverse”. These sessions provided platforms for scholars and practitioners to engage with concepts of pluralism and explore practical applications in addressing climate challenges.

Savransky, then a Senior Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London, and Director of the Centre for Critical Global Change, explored how embracing a pluriversal political imagination could help societies move beyond current climate deadlocks.

Drawing from his work, including the book Around the Day in Eighty Worlds: Politics of the Pluriverse, Savransky emphasized the importance of acknowledging multiple ways of understanding and interacting with the Earth to foster more inclusive and effective climate action.
