Alphonso Lingis – Passion

In his twitter-feeding responses to this work our own ArranJames has come to understand what many folks dealing with the day and day out grinding realities of the “3rd” world nations that Lingis writes about passing through have also been pained by,  wondering how can he wax so Romantic about such situations without really ever attending to the suffering at hand? It’s a reasonable critique to which I can only say two things, one is that I read him like I read Hunter S. Thompson, and secondly and more importantly after more than a decade of people droning on about some imaginary “lack” Lingis brought us back to the lived realities of excesses, and we can further his often pioneering work by pointing out how the many injuries and insults (large and small) of life can also exceed our limits.
